The best health insurance gap coverage plans

Health insurance is a key part of maintaining a good quality of life. However, when you are in between jobs or facing other life situations, you might lose some coverage. Still, if you appreciate the importance of health insurance, you'd know that staying without health insurance for even a seemingly short while could be dangerous. Rather than stay uninsured, there are many short-term coverage options that can keep you going in such periods. Here are a few of the best short-term plans for health insurance gap coverage.

Everest

Everest has decades of experience underwriting insurance and offers policies in about 23 states in the U.S.The premiums they offer are mainly dependent on your health status, deductibles and coinsurance. They offer low copay and coinsurance options, though, and you can enjoy substance abuse, physical therapy, mental health, and home health care benefits once your application gets approved. The best part is that you are not confined to a network, and coverage starts within 24 hours.

The downsides are that prescriptions and pre-existing conditions are not covered.

Pivot Health

With Pivot Health, you get 70% to 75% off prescription drugs; receive discounts of 20% to 40% off of eye exams, frames, lenses, and contacts. However, their plans are location-specific, and since they are available in 26 states, you'd need to visit their website to find what plan you are eligible for. Pivot Health provides great flexibility and affordability in its array of price points, coverage levels, and policy lengths.

It often requires emergency pre-certification within two days, and the maximums are very low on the cheapest plans.

 IHC Health Group

The IHC Group is an organization of insurance carriers that offers plans in 35 states. So your quote is location-specific. You could get between 20%-50% coinsurance options and coverage for supplemental dental or hospital insurance.

They offer low to high deductible options. Their plans are also flexible enough to allow you to add coverage for pre-existing conditions. What's more, other available supplemental health options could improve the standard offerings and allow you to choose what works best for you. For instance, some plans include routine check-ups, x-rays, and other diagnostic activities.

On the flip side, some plans have high deductibles, and the highly customizable plan excludes many coverages.

UnitedHealthcare

UnitedHealthcare has been selling short-term health insurance for over three decades. The length of the policies they offer varies from within one to twelve months, with the possibility of renewing up to 36 months.

They offer short-term plans covering up to 100% of medical costs once you have met the deductible. You also get options of 20%, 30%, 40%, or 50% deductibles until you reach the maximum for a year. There is also the option to customize your plan in the case of prescription medication. You can enjoy up to a three-year policy in addition to having coverage for preventative care wellness checks and some pre-existing conditions.

You might be required to join the Federation of American Consumers and Travelers (FACT), and the issue age is restricted to 19-65.
